47 Things on Thursdays: Outside the Box

Some days he sat up on top of the desk wearing jeans and playing guitar, singing “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”  Other days he sat up on top of the desk reading out loud to us with passion as he played the parts of Piggy and Ralph and the other boys. We were glued.  The dismissal bell would ring and we reluctantly got up cuz none of us wanted him to stop reading.  Occasionally he took it all outside and we gathered nature samples and gelatinous frogs eggs.  Mr. Opatkewicz, or “Mr. O” as we called him, captured our attention and both enticed us and nurtured our desire to learn and learn more.

Teachers.  I believe we each have a few special memories of teachers that made a difference in our lives and helped us to grow into the people we are today. Mr. O was one of those teachers for me.  He was an outside the box teacher.

The man called Jesus was an outside the box teacher as well.  He captured the attention of people around him with stories and kindnesses that far out-did the status quo of the day.  And when He left His earthly ministry to re-join His Father in heaven He left us the Holy Spirit.  He told those around Him,“… the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14:26

teaches us through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is an outside the box teacher as well.  He draws us in and entices us to want to learn and learn more.

He drew me in the other night.  When most normal people were sleeping, my eyes were open and my spirit was wired with purpose.  Drawn to my bookcase I perused the titles and plucked out a book that had been sitting there for over seven years.  Not an easy read, written in the 1600’s and in tiny print I was enticed and became filled with an urgency to read this book!  Settled in the living room I read and read more…

…learning and learning more and then it came.  With a gentle BAM the Holy Spirit captured my attention and gave me understanding, revealing truth that challenged me into repentance and submission.  Alongside the truth came freedom and release.

Wee hours + a dusty shelved book + tiny 1600’s lingo and print = a lesson well taught outside the box.  The clock read 2:52 a.m. and I reluctantly got up and went to bed.  Why that particular night?  Why the awake-ness and urge to read beginning at eleven o’clock at night?  No reason other than the power of the Holy Spirit at work.

The more I learn, I realize the less I know.

I am ever so thankful for the Holy Spirit’s teachings as He nurtures my growth and reminds me of all that Jesus said in His Word as he taught His disciples when He walked the earth as a man.  What has He been teaching you?

Tuesday Tidbits starting NEXT WEEK!  I will share what the Holy Spirit taught me in the wee hours….

See you then!
