Give Hope: Send Balloons!

“I fought depression during  the last and worst days of my chemo cycle.  A dear friend sent me a dozen helium balloons in bouquet fashion.  Clipped to the string of colorful ribbon were encouraging words calling me back to Hope: ‘When you stick to what you know, the what-if’s don’t matter.’ ”   p. 118, Towdah, A Cancer Survivor’s Song of Hope

I am a frugal shopper and I know.

A dozen helium balloons, delivered, is not acquired via pocket change.

This dear friend did not consider the cost of the gift – she thought more highly of the effect of encouragement this gift would have on my struggling heart.

“And do not forget to do good and share with others,

for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

Hebrews 13:16

“Stick to what you know” — such wise words delivered so cheerfully!  This was good and it was shared from the heart; I am sure the sacrifice pleased God!

This gift lifted me immediately out of the slippery slope I was on and reminded me to stand on the promises of God.  Sounds a little trite, but it was true.  I began to recall all the ways God had upheld me and carried me through my struggling days, weeks, and months.  I knew a lot about God and it was ALL graciously good!

One moment was all it took.

One moment for my friend to decide she was going to do good and share.

One moment for me to receive the balloon bouquet.

One moment for me to take to heart the gift

and be transformed in my thinking by remember all I knew about God and sticking to it!

HOPE was restored for me.

What about you?  Are you willing to make sacrifice to do good and share with the one you know is suffering during this Christmas season?

Merry Christmas!

47 Things on Thursdays: Hold On!

As the Llama boldly and quickly approached, I frantically groped for my mother’s hand and clutched it with all my might; petting zoos are not always pleasant experiences.

Tucked into our pink sheets, my sister and I would stretch our arms across the small chasm between our beds and hold hands, utilizing a hand squeezing message system until we fell asleep each night.

Meeting his parents, my sweetheart gently clasped my hand under the table and gave a knowing and supportive grip.

Nine and twenty years later, I still get an adrenalin rush of pleasure when my husband reaches over and embraces my hand with his; he still loves me!

Holding hands. Clutching in fright, squeezing for assurance, clasping for comfort, embracing with love.  We hold hands for a variety of reasons.  But why do we do it? Holding hands is an expressive action of connection.  We yearn for connection.  We were made for connection.

GOD holds my hand.  I feel it.  Do you not see it?   HE holds it firmly, gently, and for as long as I want to keep holding.  Outstretched from the highest of heavens HIS hand reaches down and places mine in HIS. Yep.  My Father in Heaven Holds my hand!

“Yah right!” you may exclaim….

Yet I will say, “It’s true!”

God’s Word is HIS firm and gentle hand.  The promises in HIS Word clutch, squeeze, clasp, and embrace.

God spoke to Joshua as he prepared to lead the Isrealites across the Jordon River and into the promised land; He instructed Joshua to “meditate on it (the Scriptures) day and night…then you will be prosperous and successful” (Joshua 1:8).  The LORD also told him (promised him), “..the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go” (v. 9b).   God does what He says He’ll do.  Always. He reached down and held Joshua’s hand, giving him a promise to “hold onto to.”

Our Father in Heaven makes HIS connection through HIS Word.  All the time and anytime,  HE leads us through the fright, assures us of His presence, comforts us as we go about our days, and embraces us with His love as He keeps His promises.

I know that GOD….

Are you frightened, in need of assurance or comfort?  Looking for some love?  Do you want God the Father to hold your hand?  Read HIS Word and grab onto HIS promises.  Meditate on His Word day and night.  HOLD ON!  You will surely feel the connection of HIS hand in yours….gently leading you along the Way; clutching, squeezing, clasping, and embracing as you have need.  Outstretched from the highest of heavens…..
